Third-cycle subject: Computer Science

One of the major challenges within computer security is how to develop system software (operating system kernels, hypervisors, security monitors, device drivers, GUIs) that are secure, and preferably provably so, but at the same time capable of fully exploiting the performance capabilities of modern hardware. Recent, highly publicized vulnerabilities such as Spectre and Meltdown illustrate well the insecurities built into current hardware and system software architectures. Finding solutions to this is currently the subject of intense research at KTH and around the world. Our approach is to combine experimental work with formal modelling and verification to identify vulnerabilities and develop countermeasures and prototypes with provable security guarantees.

The positions are supported by TrustFull, www.kth.se/TrustFull, a new project on fullstack security funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research SSF. As such, there will be strong interactions with other PhD students and Professors at the intersection of software engineering and software security.TrustFull combines novel uses of software diversity and automated software repair with formal techniques at low level to develop new techniques for end-to-end security across the entire application stack from hardware to user level applications.

Within TrustFull we implement secure system components and build models and verification tools, mainly using semiautomated theorem proving in Higher Order Logic, HOL. The research group led by professor Mads Dam and assistant professor Roberto Guanciale combines deep interest in logic, mathematics, abstract modelling and formal proofs with a strong will to apply these methods to the design, development, testing, and verification of concrete system solutions.

A strong background in computer science in general, and some previous exposure to formal methods is essential for these positions. Pluses are previous experience with the use or development of verification tools, as well as familiarity with modern operating systems and processing hardware.

The work will take place at the Department of Theoretical Computer Science, www.kth.se/tcs where the TrustFull project is hosted. In addition to the positions advertised here, three more PhD students are currently announced, along with two postdoc positions, together with the senior staff forming the backbone of the TrustFull project team.

Third-cycle subject: Speech technology or Computer science

We are looking for a PhD student  interested in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing and Human-Robot Interaction, that will work in a newly funded project at the Department of Speech, Music and Hearing (www.kth.se/tmh) within the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at KTH. The project is financed by the Swedish AI-program WASP.

Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) is Sweden’s largest ever individual research program, a major national initiative for strategically basic research, education and faculty recruitment. The program is initiated and generously funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW) with 2.6 billion SEK. In addition to this, the program receives support from collaborating industry and from participating universities to form a total budget of 3.5 billion SEK. Major goals are more than 50 new professors and more than 300 new PhDs within AI, Autonomous Systems and Software. The vision of WASP is excellent research and competence in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and software for the benefit of Swedish industry. The newly started project is called “Robot learning of symbol grounding in multiple contexts through dialog”, and is a collaboration project between KTH and Örebro University.  The aim of the project is to study computational models that allow a robot to learn language through interaction with humans, and to understand the meaning of words in their context (so-called ”symbol grounding”). The position is mainly a research position, with a small fraction of departmental duties (e.g. teaching). Applicants should have a Master degree (or similar) in a subject relevant for the research, such as computer science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, or language technology.

KTH Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) announces a PhD position for potential projects funded by the Wallenberg Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP). The main focus of the research will be on generative deep learning models such as generative adversarial networks (GAN) and variational autoencoders (VAE). We aim to develop novel generative approaches that are capable of producing samples outside of the source domain in a way that appropriately reflects underlying uncertainty. Generative models that can more fully explore the image manifold can be a powerful tool to generate training examples for supervised learning. In reinforcement learning, generative models that incorporate uncertainty can enable efficient exploration of unknown environments without strong prior assumptions.

The research position is a 48 month time-limited position that can be extended up to one year dependant on the inclusion of a maximum of 20% departmental duties, usually teaching. In order to be employed, you must be accepted as a doctoral student at KTH. The starting data is open for discussion, though ideally we would like the successful candidate to start as soon as possible.

Eligibility

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

passed a degree at advanced level,

completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or

in any other way acquired within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

The applicant must have a master’s degree in an area such as Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Informatics or related fields. Documented written and spoken English and programming skills are required. Experience with machine learning and computer vision is an important asset. A strong background in mathematics and strong programming skills are also required.
